Evaluation (UAL ISD BA Unit 2)

I’m Shunan Na, an undergraduate freshman.

During the unit 2 project, I worked with other four classmates to remake a 3 minute section from 《Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind》.” We cut out three minutes clip from the film and then combine it with different aspects of research. We extracted some main emotion as the theme. Then we made our model by taking inspiration from other movies and combining the themes we sorted out. Finally, we made two completely different but connected models.

We picked ‘protection’ and ‘escape’ as our key words for the design process. The inspiration comes from the part of the movie which shows Nausicaa want to prevent injury to the baby Ohmu, it is like a kind of protection. Also she tried to help Ohum to escape, to defend human’s action towards the Ohmu.

We got some ideas from a movie called 《CUBE》, an abbreviation of cooperative unreal box escape, is a cooperative online multiplayer Science-Fiction horror survival game. Up to six players are trying to escape a seemingly never ending complex of metal cubes and spiked with deadly booby traps. Six players present to viewers their survival desires so it can be seen as a way of self-protection and want to find a way out for the space.

In all fairness, this unit did not make me a great growth.  (Because this model and mentality are all my ideas a long time ago.)  I got the answer in repeated self-questioning. I did not absorb education from other artists. Or I did not read enough design books and information. I am a person who does not like reading books. Especially the boring professional books. So this must to be deal during next two terms. I do not want to be a famous designer, but I also do not want to be a failure.
The only thing that made me proud was that I researched a lot about the background of this movie. I learned about Japan in that era. Such as, how did people hold that kind of attitude to face of the failure of World War II. What happens when people loose them faith? What is the bubble economy and what causes it…

I crazy like animations since I was a child. 《Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind》 is an animation I liked a lot from my childhood. Now I grow up  but found a lot of different things inside. For example, I liked Nausicaa when I was a child. At that time, I thought she was a brave and kind girl, I really wanted to be the same. But now it seems completely different. Nausicaa in order to protect the villagers determined to give up her own life, but this self-sacrifice is full of irony just like Joan of Arc. Meaningless and stupid. This is an animation, so  ohum forgave humans and saved her in the end. But what about the reality?

Well, here is the feedback of the one to one tutorial.

Actually, this project can’t be called “successful”. I have a lot of conflicts with the team members. Although many of the contradictions are due to the different personalities and cultural backgrounds of each of us, I do not like to talk or even evade are the crucial reasons.

During the speech, I was very much concerned with the instructor’s comments. Despite their unsatisfactory comments. Afterwards I was relieved by Cyril’s enlightenment. And also gained more inspiration. For example, consulting “why” is better to consult “how”.

Closer to the home, my team adapted the most important part of the movie. However, because of the crudeness of the model and the disunity of all of us, we have not completed a perfect work (I think so). I’ve been thinking about how to submit the next one that I will be very satisfied with.

Let us move our sight to the second film set which is generated beyond the main one, it is like we dream about open a random door and we get into, transform to another space time, it is a way how we put every one’s idea in the film and make it more ,,,,,,,,,sense, throughing our imagination, or to say it is a kind of illusion.

So we attend to generate the cube design further with our thinking. We made a cycle pathway, through series of spaces, in different shapes, and put them in different layers, each space has only way to out or in, link to others. Cycling route has no exit to outside, always repeat the foot print. We define this as another way of protection and escape.

We gave the smoke and tiny bead real life, to let them replace the roles of human players, and the way they passing through the space, is the way how we explore the constructure.

[ Precedent research ]

[ How to get the theme ]

Firstly, Lita (one of my teammates) focused on the love between ohmn and Nausicca. But I focused on the relationship between Nausicca and teto. But they were no been taken.

Then, we both changed our ideas.

This time, we based on the characters behaviours.

“Nausicaa tried to protect the villages.

Kushana tried to protect the soldiers .

Ohmn tried to protect the nature.”

(We would like to find the same feature with all characters.) So we decided to use “protection” as our theme. At the same time, we thought about some important elements to decorate the theme. Such as time, illusion, pleasure and cruel.
